Organic food is one of the fastest growing segments of the overall food industry. With pesticides and other toxic chemicals being used to treat more and more of our food today, there has been a significant movement towards more natural farming practices. In fact, many farmers are finding that there is significant money to be made by providing for this niche market.
Health-conscious consumers tend to lean more towards organic food, for a number of reasons. The problem with many of the “modern” farming techniques is that it has had a detrimental effect on the amount of nutrition that is actually contained within the food. Oranges, for instance, have significantly less Vitamin C today than then did at the close of World War II, and similar nutritional losses have occurred in many other fruits and vegetables. Organically grown food, on the other hand, has shown to be vastly more nutritious, sometimes by as much as 50 percent or more.
There is another reason why many people choose organic food over the other options, and that has to do with chemicals. The majority of farmers around the world utilize chemical pesticides and fertilizers in order to maximize their food production, and the problem is that these chemicals get transferred to the body when the food is eaten. Farmers that choose to grow organically do not use such chemicals, and as such the food is chemical free when it reaches the stores.
